Shopify Redirects and 404s: A Migration-Safe Playbook

muradsarkarpro Updated August 16, 2026 4 min read

Changing Shopify URLs without a redirect plan can disconnect
customers, backlinks, ads, bookmarks, and search history from their
intended destinations. The goal of migration-safe handling is not to
eliminate every 404. It is to preserve real value where a close
replacement exists and return an honest not-found response where it does
not.

Choose the right
outcome for each old URL

Use three categories:

  • Permanent redirect: the content moved and a
    relevant replacement exists.
  • Useful live page: the product is unavailable but
the page can still serve demand with status, alternatives, or restock
    information.
  • 404 or 410: the resource is gone and no meaningful
    replacement exists.

Do not redirect every removed URL to the homepage. That frustrates
visitors and can be treated as a soft 404 because the destination does
not satisfy the original intent.

Build the redirect map
before launch

Crawl the current site and export URLs from analytics, Search
Console, XML sitemaps, backlinks, paid campaigns, email templates, and
internal links. Add planned new URLs and assign an outcome.

A useful redirect sheet contains:

  • Old absolute URL.
  • New final URL.
  • Reason for change.
  • Traffic, conversions, and backlink priority.
  • Market or language path.
  • Test status and owner.

Map one old URL directly to one final destination. Avoid old →
intermediate → final chains. Search engines can follow redirects, but
each hop adds latency, operational complexity, and another failure
point.

Use Shopify’s redirect
manager carefully

In Shopify admin, URL redirects are managed under Content > Menus.
You can create them individually or import a CSV for larger migrations.
Shopify states that redirects start working immediately, although
permanent redirects may remain cached by browsers and search
engines.

There are platform limitations. Fixed Shopify paths and certain
reserved prefixes cannot be redirected. Collection tag-filtering URLs
and query strings can also behave differently from ordinary broken
paths. Test representative cases instead of assuming a spreadsheet
import covers every pattern.

Shopify generally allows a redirect only when the source is broken.
If the old URL still resolves to a valid page, change or remove that
resource before expecting the redirect rule to take effect.

Handle product removals by
intent

When a product is temporarily out of stock, keep the product URL live
if the offer is expected to return. Show availability honestly, provide
a restock option, and link to close alternatives.

When a product is permanently discontinued:

  • Redirect to a true successor when specifications and intent closely
    match.
  • Keep a useful archived page when it has meaningful demand and can
    guide buyers.
  • Return 404/410 when there is no relevant replacement.

Redirecting a discontinued red shoe to a generic footwear collection
may be acceptable only when it is the closest useful next step. A random
high-revenue product is not a relevant replacement.

Design a useful 404
experience

A correct 404 status is healthy web behavior. The page should explain
that the resource is unavailable and help the visitor continue without
pretending the missing URL exists.

Include:

  • A clear not-found message.
  • Links to major collections or navigation.
  • Site search when it works well.
  • Customer-support access.
  • A route back to the home page.

Do not return 200 OK for a not-found template. That
creates a soft 404 and makes monitoring unreliable.

Migration launch sequence

  1. Freeze nonessential URL changes before the migration.
  2. Capture current URLs, canonicals, titles, structured data, internal
    links, and sitemap coverage.
  3. Prepare and review the redirect map.
  4. Implement new pages and direct redirects.
  5. Update navigation, product cards, articles, canonicals, hreflang,
    ads, feeds, and email links.
  6. Test high-value URLs on desktop and mobile.
  7. Confirm the new sitemap lists final canonical URLs.
  8. Launch during a monitored window.
  9. Crawl old and new URL sets immediately.
  10. Watch Search Console, analytics, server or platform reports, and
    revenue by landing page.

Post-launch monitoring

Track redirect errors, chains, loops, new 404s, organic landing-page
changes, conversion rate, and feed disapprovals. Separate expected crawl
noise from valuable broken destinations.

Prioritize 404s that receive internal links, backlinks, traffic, or
revenue. A random malformed URL with no visits does not deserve the same
attention as a discontinued product referenced by ten buying guides.

Keep the redirect map as operational documentation. Theme updates,
localization changes, and campaign teams can otherwise reintroduce old
addresses.

Frequently asked questions

Does every 404 need a
redirect?

No. Redirect only when a close replacement serves the original
intent. Genuine missing resources should return a proper 404 or 410.

Are 301 redirects permanent?

They signal a permanent move and may be cached. Plan and test them
carefully before launch.

Can I redirect
query-string URLs in Shopify?

Shopify warns that query strings may not work as expected in its
redirect manager. Test the exact pattern and fix internal link
generation at the source.

How long should redirects
remain?

Keep important migration redirects for the long term. Removing them
can break old links and returning visitors even after search engines
update.
